How does automatic transcription work with memozero?

Does the software automatically detect different speakers?
Yes, memozero includes automatic speaker diarisation. The tool detects when a different person is speaking and initially assigns placeholders like “Speaker A” and “Speaker B”.
You can rename these placeholders globally with a single click in the editor — for example, to “Interviewer” and “Witness”. Once you change a name, the label is automatically updated throughout the entire document.
How accurate is recognition with accents or background noise?
memozero continuously integrates current, high-performing open-source speech recognition models. If an error does occur (e.g. with unusual proper names), you can correct it instantly in the integrated editor.
Which formats can I export my transcript to?
After review, you can export your transcript for archiving or further processing:
- File formats: Export your text as a Microsoft Word file (.docx), plain text file (.txt), Markdown file (.md), or JSON format (.json).
- Customisation: You decide whether the export includes precise per-word timestamps, your comments, and the processing details of the AI model used.
How can I edit and export the transcript afterwards?
memozero provides an integrated editor with a review function that lets you refine your transcript quickly and precisely.
- Synchronised audio player: As the audio plays, the corresponding words are highlighted in the text, so you always know exactly where you are.
- Easy editing: When you spot an error, simply click on the word or punctuation to correct it on the spot.
- Smart error detection: Words with low recognition confidence are automatically flagged. Click the marker and the player jumps two seconds before the passage so you can verify it immediately.
Why a desktop app and not a web service?
memozero is deliberately built as a desktop application for Windows and macOS — not as a cloud service.
- 100% local processing: Audio files and transcripts never leave your computer at any point. This eliminates the risk of data leaks, simplifies compliance (no data processing agreement required), and makes memozero suitable even for confidential or privileged material.
- No server-side quotas: Audio length and number of files are limited only by your hardware — no minute packages, no upload caps.
- Full use of your hardware: memozero leverages Apple Silicon (M1/M2/M3) or modern Windows GPUs directly. On capable machines often faster than a typical cloud workflow including upload and download.
- Works offline: Fully functional without an internet connection — e.g. in court, in the field, or in high-security environments.
What are the system requirements for the app?
The desktop app runs on current Windows 10/11 PCs and on Macs with an Apple Silicon chip (M1/M2/M3 or newer) running macOS 15 or newer. Older Macs with Intel processors are unfortunately not supported. The app also runs smoothly on capable Windows machines (ideally with a dedicated GPU).
How well does recognition handle accents and dialects?
The technology behind memozero is extremely robust and typically handles regional accents very well.
- Heavy accents: With very strong regional dialects, accuracy may decrease since fewer AI training examples exist for these specific cases.
- Synced editor: Since text and audio run in sync in the editor, any remaining uncertainties can be corrected manually in no time.
A dialect-faithful transcription, meaning the exact rendering of regional speech with its own spelling, is not reliably possible for any speech AI at the current state of the art. In practice, for example in expert-witness contexts, it is usually not required either: a verbatim transcription of what was said is sufficient.
